5 Tips For Better Blood Sugar Control

Better blood sugar control
  1. Count carbs. A good starting point is to keep your carb intake to 45 – 60 grams of carb per meal, and 15 – 25 grams per snack; this is a reasonable amount of carbs for most people.
  2. Test your blood sugar. One of the most important things you can do to get control of your blood sugar is to TEST!! Testing before, and 2 hours after a meal can tell you how much your blood sugar increases from the food you ate; generally, if it rises more than 50 points, it’s rising too much.
  3. Look for patterns. If you notice, for example, that you have low blood sugars 4 times a week before dinner, it’s a good idea to look at your carb intake at lunch, the hours between lunch and dinner (or, if you take insulin, look at your pre-lunch insulin dose). Doing a little detective work will often give you answers and allow you to make corrections that will improve your blood sugar control.
  4. Get moving. Exercise can lower your blood sugar (although, if your blood sugar is over 300, it can actually raise it, so it’s a good idea to test before you exercise, and wait until your blood sugar is under 300 before exercising).
  5. Take your meds as directed. Taking your medications at the right time, and the right dose is important in order to keep your blood sugar under control.
